This is Leicestershire -- It's Boxing Day, 1961, and Leicester Tigers unveil the hottest front row that the club have ever fielded, in preparation for the annual showdown with the Barbarians. These three signings were hastily secured in a desperate attempt to save the festive fixture, which had been threatened by a heavy frost in the midst of the kind of Christmas weather that never seems to come anymore. But these oversized pub garden heaters weren't powerful enough. "For the past 24 hours, giant machines rented from En Tout Cas, Syston, have been roaring out flame and heat in an effort to get the frost out of the pitch," noted the December 27 edition of the Mercury. "And as each section of the pitch was treated, straw was laid. "Until around 8pm last night it seemed as if the battle against nature would be won. Then another hard frost set in and although shifts of volunteers and other workers carried on all last night and this morning it was really a hopeless task." For the first time in 61 years, since the sides met in 1910, the game was off: postponed to March 1962. It wasn't worth the wait. The Tigers lost a dull match, 3-5.
