The biggest story of the Australian Open is not Andy Murray’s recovery from an operation but the 42C temperatures say Sport.co.uk who have extended their coverage.
The first tennis Grand Slam of the season was expected to be hot with the return of Andy Murray on his favourite hard court but not that kind of hot. Players have complained that the searing heat conditions that they have been forced to play in are “inhumane”. Caroline Wozniacki’s plastic water bottle melted on court, Azarenka described the heat as being like “dancing in a frying pan” and Jankovic burnt her backside on an uncovered seat.

High temperatures are expected for the rest of the week and there is no sign yet that the organisers are going to take action to provide extra breaks or reschedule matches. Head of Operations at DSG, Matthew Tait had this to say: “No one wants to watch players in such distress that they need medical attention and the scenes we are witnessing are extraordinary. It shows how well conditioned and looked after the players are that they are playing through in this heat. Murray has been given a night match in round two on Rod Laver Arena which will certainly help his chances of progressing. We will be following this match closely and we would expect a Murray win.”
Jason Hope, Content Manager of DSG believes that Andy Murray will find it tough going, ”Murray has just three competitive matches under his belt since the US Open was played last September. The key for Murray will be to play fast and get off the court as quickly as he can. The longer you are on court the harder it will be to recover for the next match.”
