Don’t Miss Out on Westchester’s Summer Activities and Attractions

Kayaking, Poolside Parties and Theatrical Performances Highlighted

Summer is in full swing and there is much to see and do in Westchester County. Whether you’re looking for outdoor fun or want to beat the heat in the air conditioning, make us your first stop in the Hudson Valley. There is plenty of fun for people of all ages to experience throughout Westchester.

“There is still time to check out Westchester’s many special summer events and take advantage of family-friendly discounts offered by area hotels and attractions,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino.

Arts & Culture

The screens are up, the beer is chilling and the seats are almost ready! Don’t miss the opening of the new Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers grand opening on August 5. The unique movie theater will offer both new and classic movie showings, with the ability to dine right in the movie theater. With 32 beers on tap and tasty food from its talented chef, Alamo Drafthouse Yonkers, guests can be served with delicious meals while enjoying their favorite flick. Bring your children to Cross County Shopping Center in Yonkers on August 2 and August 16 and get a little crafty. As part of its SummerFest 2013, the center will host free kids' arts and crafts activities on select Friday mornings. Children between the ages of five and 12 are invited to stop by Cross County Shopping Center at 8000 Mall Walk - between The Gap and Bath & Body Works - to learn how to make Spin Art. Also on August 16, Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site in Yonkers is holding an evening of summer fun, where visitors can experience the Manor Hall’s grounds in a whole new way. A twist on the traditional movie The Wizard of Oz, Philipse Manor Hall will show the family-friendly movie Oz the Great and Powerful on its back lawn on August 16 at 8:30pm.

Visitors are invited to bring blankets and lawn chairs for the entertainment. Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site is located at 29 Warburton Avenue in Yonkers. The site is one of six historic sites and 15 parks administered by New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation – Taconic Region. The historic Manor Hall is regularly open for tours Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm from April to November. And, since you’ll be in town, take a drive over to the Yonkers waterfront on a Friday night in August for its Jazz and Blues at Dusk Summer Concert Series. The month’s line up of performances include: Soul Synergy Orchestra on August 2; Kenny Lee & The All-Stars on August 9; The Infrastructure Project on August 16; and, the Brazilian Sensation Amanda Ruzza on August 23. Explore Westchester’s Hudson River with kayaking programs in Sleepy Hollow, Croton and Tarrytown. The experienced and friendly staff at Hudson River Recreation assists pros and beginners with the sport, providing all equipment and instruction. It is a great opportunity to learn the local history, meet great people, learn or improve kayak skills and enjoy the sun. If you like to hike, bike, skate, jog or walk and enjoy nature’s picturesque surroundings all at the same time, then Westchester is the place for you. Our extraordinary trail system meanders throughout the county and offers beautiful scenery with parks, picnic spots, restaurants, historic sites and nature preserves along the way. The trails detail distances, access points, historical notes, sites of interest and available parking locations near the trails' main access points. Some of the most popular trails include the Briarcliff – Peekskill Trailway, Westchester’s RiverWalk (check proper name – the CE cut the ribbon on a section fo this last year), Colonial Greenway, North County Trailway, the Old Croton-Aqueduct Trail/State Historic Park and South County Trailway.
