Three children have already died this year as a result of heat-related illness.
Shrewsbury, MA (PRWEB) July 25, 2013
Extreme heat and its impact on individuals is certainly felt by everyone – especially children. Whether it’s outside on the playground or inside of the family car, young children are at high risk when it comes to the heat. According to a June 25, 2013 article in the Orlando Sentinel, children’s bodies heat up three to five times faster than adults’ bodies do. This year, officials worry, is on target to be one of the worst yet when it comes to heatstroke-related deaths in children.
As of June, there have already been three deaths in the U.S. as a result of children being left in hot cars. Last year, 32 children in total died. Although many states have laws against leaving a child alone in an unattended car, it often only takes a few minutes and some parents may not have thought twice. With record breaking temperatures this summer already, the local insurance agents at Mancuso-Nowak Insurance Agency urge parents to educate their kids about the heat, symptoms of heat-related illness, and how important it is never to go into a car without a parent.
Start by talking to kids about the warning signs of heat-related illness:
· Flushed skin
· High fevers
· Confusion
· Dizziness
· Nausea
· Weakness
· Pale skin
· Profuse sweating
Being outdoors for only a few moments in extreme heat can result in many of these symptoms. Parents should encourage children to come inside, drink some water and rest in cooler conditions should they feel any of these symptoms.
However, it is important not to rely solely on the children to know when they may be experiencing symptoms. Parents should:
· Limit outdoor play time during extreme heat.
· Always keep children hydrated.
· Dress children in loose-fitting, light colored clothing.
In the event a child is experiencing heat-related illness symptoms, parents should always call 911 if the symptoms are serious or persist. However, at-home remedies include drinking plenty of water, lying the child down in a cool place and having the child take a cool bath, and remaining indoors in air conditioned temperatures.
For parents concerned about their children getting inside of a hot car, child safety features can prevent children from being able to enter the vehicle unattended. In Massachusetts, auto insurance is difficult to obtain when there are legal implications on a driving record - leaving a child unattended in the car is illegal.
At Mancuso-Nowak Insurance Agency, the local agents are committed to keeping families safe. Anyone with questions about children and the heat, or driving with children should give the agency a call!
