The mayor of Filer, Idaho and other members of city council are taking the heat for the actions carried out by a local police officer.
The officer, Tarek Hassani, was caught on his dash-cam shooting and killing a disabled man’s pet black Labrador retriever on Feb 8, 2014 after responding to a report of loose dogs. The dog belonged to Rick Clubb, who was throwing a birthday party for his 9-year-old son at the time of the shooting.
“I just think there was other ways to handle it besides shooting my dog and firing a gun right in my front yard when we were having a birthday party and there were kids around,” Clubb said to KMVT.
After two months of public hearings and an investigation into the incident, city officials decided that Hassani’s action were justified. The officer returned to the force this week, ending his paid administrative leave.
According to CBS News, angry residents subsequently filed petitions to recall Mayor Rick Dunn as well as Filer’s four city council members. Each petition received at least 20 signatures, which carries the petition on to the next stage. If the residents obtain 201 signatures in the next 75 days, a recall election will take place.
According to Magic Valley, each member would be voted on individually, and the governor would appoint a new council, which would in turn appoint a new mayor for the city.
