With record heat scorching Nevada, local insurance agents offer energy saving tips for homeowners

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) July 25, 2013

In July, Nevada experienced a heat wave that set records – and that hasn’t been, and surely will not be, the last one the state sees. On June 30, 2013, KOLO News reported that there had been one death and dozens of hospitalizations in Las Vegas as a result of temperatures reaching an all-time record of 115 degrees.

Excessive heat, especially when it does not cool down at night, is the number one weather killer in the United States. When the heat becomes unrelenting, many homeowners turn to appliances such as air conditioners, fans and central cooling units to stay cool and avoid the heat. However, although energy providers prepare for extreme weather to be sure the electric system can sustain the need for power, it is important for homeowners to conserve energy, too. At American Best Agency, the local insurance agents want their Nevada neighbors to stay cool and safe, but they also want to offer tips for conserving energy while doing so.

Try out these tips for beating the heat, without over-abusing energy:

·     Turn off ceiling fans. Instead of cooling off a room, ceiling fans merely circulate air – this means if the air is warm all a ceiling fan will do is move the warm air around the room.
·     Avoid heat-generating physical activity that also uses energy such as cooking or washing clothes. The more appliances are kept off, the less heat they will generate, and the less energy will be used.
·     Use the “Energy Saving” option on all home air conditioners. This can save energy and save money.
·     For every degree a thermostat is raised, savings of 5% on energy bills can be achieved.
·     Set refrigerators and freezers at ideal temperatures and avoid opening and closing them during the peak of a heat wave to save energy.
·     Clean out the filters in the air conditioners frequently to be sure they are operating at their most efficient.

Before the heat wave hits, many homeowners may also consider “Energy Star” rated appliances. These home appliances are beneficial for homeowners and the environment – saving energy and saving money. Additionally, many homeowners insurance policies may offer discounts for homeowners with these appliances in their homes.

Officials throughout the West Coast have worked to set up air-conditioned cooling-centers throughout the communities affected by the heat wave.

Nevada residents looking for tips on beating the heat and saving energy – as well as saving money on their insurance – are encouraged to give the local agents at American Best Agency a call.
