According to a new infographic designed by Move Hub, the U.S.A. is in fact not the holder of the most powerful passport, but instead is led by the United Kingdom, Sweden and Finland.
The heat map was created by moving abroad information website movehub.com and revealed that countries in Europe, North America and Australia unsurprisingly have the greatest access to the world in terms of visa-free (or visa on arrival) travel.
Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom passport holders have access to 173 countries. Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg and U.S.A. passport holders have access to 172 countries.
Still, the American passport allows some of greatest travel freedom in the world.
“Just ask any one of the developing world’s citizens if they’d rather win the lottery or a U.S. passport,” the creators of the map wrote. “Chances are they’d say the latter.”
Interestingly, citizens of the EU are offered a special kind of privilege – that is, they’re given access to any of the 22 EU member countries without a passport, except the UK and Ireland who chose to abstain from what is known as the Schengen Area agreement.
South America is given moderate access to the world, and people in Asia or Africa struggle to receive any access at all.
Afghanistan is the country with the least powerful passport, whose citizens are able to visit only 28 countries. Iraq, Pakistan and Somalia join Afghanistan at the bottom of the list, with access to just 31 or 32 countries.
