Of the other eight rushed to the corporate hospital with 80-90 per cent burns, the condition of five is said to be very critical.
"Even though we can't tell you their names, the condition of five of them is not medically good. Their vital organs were cooked by the heat," observed Dr Ranjit Reddy of Apollo, briefing mediapersons.
V Madhusudhan (8), V Mohana Krishna (7), Mohammad Taqvi (42), Kasi Chinna (19), Tatikayala Rajyalakshmi (25), Rayudi Suryanarayana (20) and B Appalanarasamma (60) were kept and being treated at the Critical Care unit there.
"The government will take care of their medical expenses," said Rajahmundry MP M Murali Krishna. YSRC president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy also visited the patients.
Meanwhile, the victims recouping at hospitals in Amalapuram and Rajole recalled the harrowing experience. They said the wind blowing the other way saved them from certain death. "There was a very loud sound and I opened the door. As the fire and heat entered the house, we ran out into the coconut plantation on the other side, where there was no gas, and we were all spared," said one Bonam Kalyani.
