Has Been Optimized

When LeBron James officially opted out of his contract with the Heat, a number of other free agents decided to wait for James to sign. Chris Bosh stated he was committed to Miami and hopefully rejoining LeBron in South Beach. However, with James undecided about where he will be playing next season, Bosh may not wait much longer.

After four seasons with the Heat, Bosh opted out of the final two years of his contract. He would have been paid over $20 million next year. Instead, Bosh’s move was intended to free up the cap space to bring Dwyane Wade and James back to Miami. Now, the Houston Rockets have offered Bosh a maximum contract worth $88 million over four years.

Bosh must consider playing with James Harden and Dwight Howard of the Rockets. In Houston, Bosh would have a proven rim defender in Howard. Bosh is a very long player at six-feet-ten-inches and is skilled in the key. However, Bosh does not have the size of Howard and cannot dominate everyone inside.

Yet, that is not a problem for Bosh who dramatically improved his shot from beyond the arc. In his first three seasons with the Heat, Bosh converted 22.6 percent of his 134 three-pointers. Last season, Bosh shot a total of 218 three-pointers and hit 33.9 percent of them. His ability to stretch the floor will give Houston another threat from long distance.

Bosh is currently 29 years-old, so his signing would give the Rockets four quality years with the Dallas native on the roster. While in Miami, Bosh, Wade, and James led the Heat to four NBA Finals in four seasons, winning the championship twice. Houston would be bringing in an experienced player to bolster a roster on the cusp of being a serious contender in the Western Conference.

At one time, LeBron’s decision regarding re-signing in Miami was very important to Chris Bosh’s future. Bosh no longer needs to wait for LeBron. Instead, Bosh may find himself closer to a third championship than James.
