In attempting to lure LeBron James back, the Miami Heat added the first pieces to their new roster. Regardless, it is still way too early to tell if the new additions will be enough for James. The two new Heat players are Danny Granger and Josh McRoberts. Granger’s new contract will be worth $4.2 million over two seasons. McRoberts will spend 4 years with the Heat making approximately $23 million.
Granger, who spent the majority of his career with the Indiana Pacers, has been a shell of the player that used to step on the court. Before injuring his left knee, Granger played eight full seasons in Indiana and was emerging as a rising star in the league. He averaged double figures in scoring before the injury and reached the All-Star game for the 2008-2009 season.
However, his injury cost him almost all of the 2012-2013 season. Coming back as the centerpiece for the Pacers was also out of the question. Without Granger, Paul George led Indiana to the Eastern Conference finals, ultimately losing to Miami in seven games. Last season, Granger was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers where he averaged 8.3 points per game coming off the bench.
On the other hand, McRoberts spent his career slowly improving his game. McRobert’s last two seasons playing for the Charlotte Bobcats were the best of his career. He averaged 8.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.9 assists per game while in Charlotte. McRoberts has never been a dominant force on the court, but he surely is a solid contributor.
Charlotte, who will be play as the Hornets for the first time in 12 seasons, wanted to keep McRoberts. His passing ability as a forward is somewhat rare. Yet, potentially playing with LeBron James inspired a move for the big man.
The Heat have a lot more work to do before LeBron decides to return. The Heat’s effort to sign Chris Bosh will most likely change because Bosh received a very enticing offer for a maximum contract to play in Houston. The Heat’s signing more role players will grab James’ attention, but there are better options for LeBron James as of now.
If Miami wants to keep LeBron, the signings of Granger and McRoberts are steps in the right direction. However, Pat Riley and the Heat have a lot more work to do before LeBron is convinced to stay in South Beach.
