*Senior BJP rebel leader Jaswant Singh slipped into coma on Friday owing to head injuries he sustained after a fall at his house in the national capital. Doctors described his condition as "highly critical".*

Singh was rushed to Army Research and Referral Hospital at about 1 am in a highly critical condition. Family members brought him to the hospital after finding him lying unconscious on the floor of his house.

In an official statement, the Defence Ministry said, "Examination at the hospital showed him to be in coma, with signs of raised intracranial tension and scalp haematoma." Singh was on life support and under constant monitoring by a team of neurosurgeons and critical care providers.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to Singh's family. The PMO said in an official communication that Modi "prays for Singh's speedy recovery".

Senior BJP leader L K Advani and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh visited the hospital and assured help to the family. People of Barmer, Jaswant's birthplace, expressed shock after hearing the news and held prayers for his recovery.

A former Union minister who handled defence and external affairs portfolios, Singh walked out of the BJPafter he was denied ticket to contest from Barmer.

A first generation leader of the BJP, Singh was a close confidant of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and played a key role during the previous NDA regime. He was, however, sidelined after Modi was elevated to the centre stage before the elections.

Singh was hoping that he would be taken back into the party but that did not happen. His son and MLA Manvendra Singh, too, is facing the heat for supporting his rebel father. Reported by Deccan Herald 14 hours ago.
