The auto accident attorneys at Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers remind drivers to be vigilant about checking for tire damage related to the hazards of driving in hot weather.
New Haven, CT (PRWEB) August 19, 2014
As the summer comes to a close, the auto accident attorneys at Jonathan Perkins Injury Lawyers are reminding motorists to check their vehicle’s tires for signs of damage done by driving in the heat. Drivers who neglect standard vehicle maintenance are susceptible to unexpected problems, such as tire blowouts, which may lead to accidents causing injury or death.
According to a June 28, 2013 safety advisory from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the combination of hot weather and underinflated tires greatly increases the likelihood of tire failure. The NHTSA estimates that 11,000 accidents each year are attributable tire failures, most commonly failures caused by underinflated tires or worn down tire treads.
In order to prevent tire failures, the NHTSA recommends that motorists do the following:· Inflate your tires to the recommended pounds-per-square-inch (PSI) pressure for your vehicle.
· Keep a tire pressure gauge in your vehicle and check your tires’ pressure at least monthly
· Familiarize yourself with your vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring systems.
· Check the recommended replacement schedule for your tires.
· Monitor the tread on your tires, and replace any which are worn down to less than 2/32 of an inch.
Drivers can check the tread on their tires by using the penny test. To do this, place a penny in the tread of the tires, with Abraham Lincoln’s head facing you. If you can see the top of Lincoln’s head, then the tire’s tread is too worn and should be replaced.
By performing standard maintenance checks on tires and the rest of a vehicle, drivers can avoid tire failures and their related accidents.
