Radio signals hit by warm sunnier days This is Derbyshire --

THE sun may be shining but it is having an interesting side effect on radio reception.

This week, listeners to Radio Derby on 104.5 FM have been surprised to find themselves listening to a Dutch broadcast instead.

The strange phenomenon has been put down to the level of high pressure, which is creating the hot weather.

Other stations in the area have also been hit. Jeff Martin, the director of Erewash Sound, which operates out of Ormiston Enterprise Academy, said it was a frequent occurrence for them.

He said: "We are often taken over by a BBC station in Wales and it happened on my drive into work yesterday.

"I'm not entirely sure why it happens but as soon as there is any hot, stuffy weather, it happens to us.

"The station we pick up is about a three-and-a-half-hour drive away but our frequencies are so close they bombard our airwaves.

"Their power is obviously a lot more than ours so it just gives in. It's very frustrating and there's very little we can do about it. We just have to wait it out."

A BBC spokesperson said: "Owing to the current high pressure and good weather, some viewers and listeners in particular areas in the East Midlands might experience some short term Interference to BBC television and radio services.

"This is being caused by interfering signals from distant transmitters travelling abnormally far and it will only be temporary. The vast majority of the BBC's transmissions are not affected by this period of interference, as the BBC's networks are engineered to be generally very robust.

"Listeners to analogue radio in affected areas may hear other programmes on top of the BBC service, while television viewers may experience slight occasional pixelation or break-up."

According to forecasts, the heat will be staying and may continue to cause interference.

Today and Thursday are forecast to be warm but overcast, with the sun coming out again for the weekend. Reported by This is 12 hours ago.
