(PRWEB) May 12, 2014

Opening night for the 49th season of racing at Elko Speedway rained out Saturday night.

A few events were completed though including Qualifying Time Trials for the two fastest divisions. The Fast Time of the 18 Minnesota Corn Growers Super Late Model cars went to Paul Paine from Mound (MN), he clocked in at time of 13.921 seconds registering 96.976 MPH on the 3/8th mile oval at Elko Speedway, he edged out Chad Walen of Prior Lake (MN) by .039 seconds.

The Big 8 fast time was set by Cole Anderson a 15 year old from Northfield (MN) who bested all 18 cars in attendance. He scored a time of 14.845 seconds, that is 90.94 MPH, he beat out Michael Beamish from Eagan (MN) by .048 seconds. Anderson is a former 1/4 midget champion making a splash in his first full year in a full bodied stock car.

The Pepsi Power Stocks completed two heat races before the rain came. The first one was won by Jack Purcell from Bloomington (MN) who finished just ahead of Paul Hamilton from Hastings (MN). Purcell moved up from the Mini-Stock division after winning the championship last year.

The second heat was won by 2013 point standings runner-up Tom Doten from St Paul (MN), he fought off the hard charges of Dave Robinson from Eagan (MN) for the win.

The front wheel drive 4cyl Mini-Stocks have been added to the weekly race program at Elko Speedway. Michael Weiss from Bloomington (MN) won the heat race by finishing just ahead of Michael Wachs Jr from Shakopee (MN).

The only Main Event that was completed was in the Bandolero division. Brody Wulf is one of three brothers from Lakeville (MN) who race in that class, Brody beat his siblings and everyone else to sweep both the heat and the feature. Tristan Swanson from Elko (MN) finished runner up at the checkered flag.

The rain came and did not stop, causing a cancellation of the rest of the race program. Spectators were issued rain tickets good for one of the next two race events at Elko Speedway, either May 17th or 24th.

Racing will resume at Elko Speedway Saturday May 17th at 7pm with the NASCAR Whelen All American Series Super Late Models, Big 8, Thunder Car, Power Stock, Great North Legends, Mini-Stocks and Bandolero divisions. Free Live Music after racing in Champions bar by Lost Highway.
