Fans said the heat from the sun was unrelenting on the unprotected seats at the Santa Clara stadium, according to a story in the San Jose Mercury News. The heat caused many of the 68,000 spectators to abandon their sun-drenched seats by halftime and seek refuge in the concourses and other shaded areas.
