Tai Woffinden must wait to be crowned speedway World Champion, despite heroic battle in Scandinavian Grand Prix This is Scunthorpe -- SPEEDWAY star Tai Woffinden must wait to be crowned the sport's World Champion, despite a heroic battle in the Scandinavian Grand Prix. Woffinden needed to finish 22 or more points ahead of closest rival Jaroslaw Hampel in Stockholm tonight (Saturday, September 21), to become Britain's first World Champion in 13 years. The former Scunthorpe Scorpion suffered a broken collarbone during heat two of the meeting, following a collision with Tomasz Gollob, but carried on riding despite the injury. The crash with resulted in Gollob being taken to hospital and Woffinden being excluded from the heat. Battling on through the pain barrier, the Scunthorpe ace won heat 14 and finished second in heats eight and 11 on his way to picking up seven points from five rides. Woffinden leads the championship with 141 points, closely followed by Hampel, on 125. After the meeting, the 23-year-old confirmed he is set to undergo collarbone surgery in Derby on Sunday, but he hopes to be ready for a potentially nail-biting final GP of the series in Poland on October 5.
