Tai Woffinden misses out on Speedway championship despite heroic battle This is Scunthorpe -- Speedway star Tai Woffinden has missed out on being crowned the Speedway World Champion tonight, following a heroic battle in tonight's Speedway Grand Prix in Stockholm. Woffinden needed to finish 22 or more points ahead of his closest rival Jaroslaw Hampel tonight (Saturday, September 21), to become the world champion. Woffinden goes into the next Speedway clash, with a total of 141 points in the championship standings, closely followed by Hampel, who finished with a total of 125. With his nearest rival dropping points in the final, Woffinden needs six points to be crowned the first British World Champion in 13 years, on October 5. As a result of a crash in heat two, Woffinden suffered a broken collarbone, but carried on riding despite the injury. Woffinden confirmed he is set to undergo collarbone surgery in Derby tomorrow (Sunday, September 22) and he hopes to be ready for the Torun FIM Speedway Grand Prix, in Poland on October 5. The crash with Tomasz Gollob in heat two, resulted in Gollob being taken to hospital and Woffinden being excluded from the heat. Woffinden's courageous ride saw him battle through pain, following this crash. He managed to finish with seven points overall in tonight's five rides. Woffinden won heat 14, placed second in heats 8 and 11 and did not finish in heat 17, after he pulled up on lap two, in pain. He did not go through to the semi-finals.
